Top Second Life sims of the month recommended by Koinup members

If you're back from vacation probably you should take the time to visit some of the new awesome places that are getting popular (and hot) in Second Life, these weeks. If you're looking for highly scenografic environments with bridges and victorian atmosphere, probably you can't miss Lordshore (image below by Toxicmenges)

Snapshot_011

If you instead are looking for a cool, urban-like place to shop and accessorize your avatar, probably the best destination is Boudoir City (image below by Torley)

AMG BOUDOIR - Skins, Hairs, Sh...

More artistic tastes can be nourished at CHIGASAKI, where the shopping experience can be an artistic enjoynment moving yourself between installations and art pieces.....

OMNIBUS erotica

It's not easy to define erotica, it's obviously quite a personal thing...:)) and I didn't want only to expose my own likes and dislikes (washing my clean laundry in public)......
I wanted to find a few images from the KoinUp vaults though that weren't what I would call Glamour, images of attractive males and females in "come and get me" poses, nor images looking like adverts for breast implants and lingerie.

I wanted to find some stuff which sort of smoulders.

This one which is called Mine by RayneBlood666 from the Sims is obviously heavily loaded towards the Vampire community (hmmm...do vampires consider themselves a community, I wonder).
Now, whether or not the exchange of this particular virtual fluid is something you go for is a bit beside the point for me here.
I like the ownership, and the ease of this relationship and the look in his eyes.

The strange mix of Virtual and "real" background works for me...it emphasises the other-worldy apparition.

Fee Quintissa has more than one piece which I could have picked here. Taken in Second Life, this piece is called Erotic 7.

Fee obviously knows how to capture a bit of smouldering, and, unlike many less experienced photographers, knows the value of a hard 'crop', (I'm not talking whips here, I mean the severe cutting out of all unnecessary bits of the image which contribute little to the finished image)..

Desire seems a very appropriate name for this piece by Leila Carroll also taken in SL. This is one of a series of shots which she took around a particular setting and pose, several of which I could have picked.

It seems obvious to me that what is hidden is often more erotic than what is shown, and Leila seems to share this view.

Now Marty86 took this photo in the Sims. Its called This Love.

Sometimes it's not necessary to get very fancy with your ideas. This is almost classic. The pose is familiar (made me smile) and near to the viewers experience (most of us, surely) and is therefor very accessible.

You just have to frame the shot well...and get that look on the girls face...:))))

Now, at first glance this is probably pretty far away from what most people would call erotica. ..... but, like I said it's a personal thing. Its called Creep, taken in the Sims by Sandyvm. I think it's a great image.

It has a familiarity, a story which doesn't need telling, it's been told visually.

I don't have issues with nudity or explicit sexual images, I just see more poor ones than successful ones,....so I wanted to give a sort of alternative view to those hot-blooded happy snappers out there in Virtual Worlds..... Erotica is, for me, that blend of tension, relationship, tender love, sex and power, and hardly a nipple to be seen...

Steamy is always better than anatomical, I think....

Meet Me in the Metaverse - Omega Point

There is little else more thrilling than an idea coming to fruition. Virtual worlds enable us to accomplish and experience things we’ve only dreamed about, read about, or seen in movies. Worlds like SL, the Sims, World of Warcraft and similar allow us to wander faraway lands or crawl into someone’s imagination. This week on Meet Me in the Metaverse, I want to take you to a Dark Fantasy/Sci-fi World…Omega Point.

Omega Point has predominately sepia toned infrastructure with a good bit of neon highlights. It feels very HR Giger inspired with surreal dark themed biomechanical imagery. Additionally, the creators worked hard to make this single sim into a richly full destination. They accomplished this by having several elevations that are all interconnected. It is almost so full you can lose yourself inside. I’ve visited Omega Point a few times and on each visit I’ve found even more than on the last. Omega Point is advertised as a hangout, but there is a bit of biomechanical themed retail products as well. This is a lovely place to spend some time especially if you are a science fiction fan.

OmegaPoint by senswansong

Senswansong's OmegaPoint captures this sim perfectly. As you can see above, the many walkways and neon accents and how organically mechnical this featured sim really is. Senswansong did a wonderful job with both the choice of windlight settings and the perspective.

Snapshot_019 by marmadukePhoto by: marmaduke

I chose Mamaduke's Snapshot_019 to illustrate the depth this sim has as well as the tenticle-like arm accents that really do make it into that biomechanical feeling I was discussing above.

This last pic is one I took on my most recent visit. Each one of the shots I chose today seemed more of the raw photography style vs enhanced pics. Perhaps that is because this sim is so wild that it didn't need the extras.

I want to remind all you SL'rs to tag your pictures with the SLURL and share them with the rest of the community. All you need to do is add the sim name with /128/128/0 at the end of the prepopulated field titled Add SLurl.

Koinup’s Cream of the Crop - Hiperia3D’s Machinima Selections

Not only does Koinup have some fabulously talented photographers and still artists but we have an unbelievable pool of machinimagraphers as well. These folks stage everything from the most simple of how-tos to elaborate music videos. They take up gigs and gigs of space on their hard drives filming in 3D game platforms, then edit, cut, set them to a sound track of voice or music, and release them into the wild for our viewing pleasure. The results are amazing short films where the machinimists is entire team (director, cameraman, editor, sound engineer...).

Koinup’s Cream of the Crop this week I’ve picked Hiperia3D’s Machinima Selections. This group was founded in April of 2008. Its aim is to promote the works of machinima directors. It’s open to works from all 3D worlds and currently contains 192 wonderfully entertaining pieces. Make sure to turn up your sound as each of the following have fantastic soundtracks.

<a href="http://www.koinup.com/toxicmenges/work/92641/">LoveLife</a> - a <a href="http://www.koinup.com/in-games-mmorpg/on-videos/">LoveLife</a> by <a>toxicmenges</a> on <a href="http://www.koinup.com">Koinup</a>

Machinima by: toxicmenges

Toxicmenges' LoveLife could easily be a vid to get people interested in SL. In 4 short minutes, Toxic takes us on a journey from orientation island down the rabbithole into some of SL's big activites and landmarks while illustrating not only how incredibly beautiful Secondlife is but how complex it is as well.

<a href="http://www.koinup.com/RockerFaerie/work/151481/">Art is hard</a> - a <a href="http://www.koinup.com/in-games-mmorpg/on-videos/">Art is hard</a> by <a>RockerFaerie</a> on <a href="http://www.koinup.com">Koinup</a>

Machinima by: RockerFaerie

This piece by RockerFaerie is named Art is Hard. Perhaps it is commentary on the challenges that artists in 3D worlds encounter while trying to create in this bold new medium or perhaps is it just a music vid showcasing Cursive's song Art is Hard which is the soundtrack. Either way it's pretty brilliant and worth the watch.

<a href="http://www.koinup.com/BrynOh/work/150086/">Self</a> - a <a href="http://www.koinup.com/in-games-mmorpg/on-videos/">Self</a> by <a>BrynOh</a> on <a href="http://www.koinup.com">Koinup</a>

Machinima by: BrynOh

BrynOh's Self is a thing of true beauty. I particularly love the after effects Bryn uses in presenting this piece for our viewing pleasure. Shot on location at Immersiva sim that was designed and built by Bryn.

If your group is having a contest or an event, please PM me on Koinup and let me know. I'd love to cover all the fun to be had in joining such expressive groups of people from all over.

Lainy Voom and the Art of Machinima

The Virtual World is a hybrid place and each person is presented with the same tools and platform base from which to work from, each virtual environment presents a new challenge, each has its own nuance and ways to interact within its own community – the journey is an exciting pioneering opportunity to create, with pockets of truly unique and diverse work being cultivated. Limitations can be overcome; imagination and ingenuity are key factors in this process. What is fascinating to me is to watch the evolution in each creative area unfold in the most interesting of ways. I would like you to consider this notion however - as you make and experiment your way through to the other side of your computer screen ; remember that aspects of virtual worlds are ephemeral and documenting the process is an important part of our Virtual History. In a blink of a virtual eye it can and does vanish, so take the time to record it in a way that suits you best & share it with those who share your passion and maybe those who frown upon this virtual culture of ours will be compelled in some way to think again? We each play our part and the history making is for us all. We are a community collective after all.

'Push' Machinima by Lainy Voom

The Machinima work of Lainy Voom is exceptional and a great example of evolution within this particular creative field; showing both great skill and vision; the attention to detail and timing is truly captivating – the flow when watching draws you deeply into a seamless but ether real world, which feels to me like watching a visualisation of a dream recalled, at times it's almost haunting. Lainy has definitively set a new bench mark in the virtual world of Machinima. I am curious by nature and wanted to know a little more .... Trace Sanderson aka Lainy Vroom is an independent visual artist based in the UK, whose is focused on animation captured in real time within virtual worlds and also game engines. She started creating “Machinima” in 2004. I have long been fascinated by her work - If your curiosity is twitching then go here to see some more or her work and have your fill, and oh of course yes, please read on!

Stills Image from 'Push' by Lainy Voom

Q1. Tell us in 6 words what best describes you.

1. Down to earth
2. Direct
3. Opinionated
4. Stubborn
5. Loyal
6. Idealist

Q2. What brought you to the Metaverse and how did you get here?'

A. A friend had asked me mid 2006 but my computer spec at the time would not run SL, then when I bought a new computer in February 2007 she asked me again and I jumped right in. I wandered around for 2-3 days, not really thinking Second Life was up to much. A couple of weeks later I tried again and decided to film something, that is when it really "clicked" into place and I began to realise I could literally do anything I wanted, create anything. That kind of freedom I wasn't getting from using game engines, which is what I was doing before. Game engines have so many rules, they box in creativity (at least for me).

Q3. Push' made a huge impact on the Machinima community recently, visually it has an immediate & dynamic appeal - what is the story behind this ? Is it more than an amazing eclectic visual collection - Does it tell a story?

A. It began as an experiment, what would happen if I just started filming something, not analysing anything and just making the first thing that sprang to mind. I tried to let the film grow organically by itself. It's more a stream of consciousness exercise than anything with hidden deeper meaning. Towards the end of the filming process it began to become more contrived, I ended up scrapping all the later footage in order to bring it back to the initial experiment.

Q4. If you could change or improve anything to access the virtual world better what would you say or do ?

A. I would improve beginner access to Second Life. I've explored as many virtual worlds as I can get my hands on and all of them have better designed noob access than SL. One of the best I think is VSide, where the player learns how to use the avatar, the menu, how to purchase items, change the way the avatar looks, use emotes/animations all in a private space before being let free on the world proper. This really helps to build up confidence and something I think SL lacks on the starter island. It does not surprise me that so many people drop out at the initial stage with Second Life.

Q5. What or whom do you think has been your biggest influence in the Metaverse and why?

A. The content creators are my biggest influence, I would not be creating machinima without their work inspiring films or enabling the films to be made in the way that they are. It is the biggest reason I use SL to make films, and not other machinima specific engines out there.

Q6. How do you see the progress of visualization in the Metaverse?

A. Quality and realism will continue to rise as long as hardware/software/engines keep up with each other.

Stills Image from 'Push' by Lainy Voom

Q7. What are you working on right now?

A. I have some commisions I'm working on right now, but after that I'm working on another poem.

Q8. What tools do you use when making Machinima and what would you personally recommend?

A. I rarely use any tools other than Fraps to record, I would recommend learning how to frame and use avatars before learning how to move the camera around. At least that is how I began doing it, it will not be the same for everyone.

Q9. In your minds eye if you close your eyes right now, what do you see?

A.I see a huge stack of books I haven't managed to read yet!

Now Lainy you have the opportunity to ask yourself 3 questions ... anything you like

Q1 & A - Lainy, will you ever get round to hoovering the house this week?
Q2 & A - Lainy, do you fancy another cup of tea?
Q3 & A - only two questioins asked ! ack to control your own destiny if only for a brief period (Poid)

Meet Me in the Metaverse - Dive World

Under the sea…Under the sea…Darling it's better…Down where it's wetter. On today's Meet Me in the Metaverse I'm taking you all to the lovely sim called Dive World where you can don your scuba gear, swimming AO, mermaid outfit or whatever suits your fancy and explore the ocean depths. As you back roll off the docks, you enter the domain of the fishes…and let me tell you this sim has tons to see down there. A few shipwrecks, sharks and whales of many varieties, tons of tropical fish, morays eels , coral reefs, and even sting rays.

This sim is owned by Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). From what I can tell they just utilize SecondLife to virtually dive and also advertise their real world presence. Additionally, Dive World promotes Project Aware not only through traditional channels but via a game you can play on the sim. Project Aware is a nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving underwater environments. They perform cleanups and conservation and education on protecting our RL oceans. Check out Project Aware here: http://www.projectaware.org/ and PADI here: http://www.padi.com/scuba/.

Dive World_35 by YuNEO_NagyPhoto by: YuNEO_Nagy

This work above from YuNeo_Nagy simply titled Dive World_35 is a wonderful composition. It not only is a lovely perspective but the use of the light is mighty clever. The other part I really liked about this piece was how real it looked.
Diving-Larz by KikiDeVinna Photo by: KikiDeVinna

KikiDeVinna did a fantastic job catching her subject scuba diving in her piece called Diving Larz. I love all the details captured in this shot. From the bubbles to the whales in the background she doesn't lose the subject of her piece.

night by _oO-Sieg-Oo_ Photo by: _oO-Sieg-Oo_

_oO-Sieg-Oo_'s work called Night captures the coral reef with wonderful contrast when shot in the night setting. The tropical fish just pop against darkness of the reef.

I found this last pic by doing a tag search as it wasn't in the collection. I want to remind all you SL'rs to tag your pictures with the SLURL and share them with the rest of the community. All you need to do is add the sim name with /128/128/0 at the end of the prepopulated field titled Add SLurl.

OMNIBUS Dreamtime

Although mainly seen as a concept of the Australian Aboriginals, Dreamtime was previously a far more common belief system, globally.
As consciousness has changed over the last few hundred years to its current focussed, centred status, these types of concepts have fallen by the wayside.
Traditionally Dreamtime is seen as a parallel space-time continuum more real than reality itself. In it Reality is merely a dream of the gods or ancestors, and we are mere dreams of Dreamers.

Those of us who have spent some time in the Metaverse will know, similarly, that "reality" is merely a viewpoint.

I am my Alt's Alt.....
My human is my carbon-based avatar....

....and so..... I start with this piece from IMVU by Blank called kids need an escape it seems appropriate, showing consciousness on both sides of the computer screen, as difficult as this may be for us to get our intellectualism to accept.

Similarly this image by mary dory from the Sims and titled Dreamboat <3 makes me wonder....am I author or just the figment of some other beings imagination?.....Questions of fate and destiny are also implied.

Who is dreaming who? No particularly strong hint is given in the image, which I like. Ambiguity is our friend...:))

Again a piece by Sandybvv again from the Sims, which she calls Realm of Dreams quite appropriately. This seems to me a classic image where viewer and viewed are indistinguishable, consciousness (viewpoint) not being heavily weighted in favour of one or the other.

The animal soul is a highly traditional allegory for this diffused dream-like state, too.

If you have spent time outdoors under a star filled sky with little light pollution you will know what an amazing experience this must have been for millions of years. This image from Second Life by sabrainsl called HouseinDreamsF gives the night sky a magic feel. It looks like the actual Dreamtime continuum is floating, glowing overhead.

It does worry me slightly, with the new Blue Mars (and whatever future developments may arise) style of extreme "reality" based Metaverse locations, that as technology makes obsessive reproduction of "reality" possible, we may lose out on the Dreamtime ambiguity of Virtual Worlds that is such a joy to us all.

However..... I am constantly reassured by KoinUp members and their (your) refusal to be confined to anyone else's definition of Real.

Creativity is both revolutionary and anarchistic...and long may it be so.

Koinup's Cream of the Crop - Historical Works

Humans by and large learn and retain greatly via visuals. History is one of those things without media becomes a mundane fact memorizing exercise. Creative individuals can be inspired by a study of history to use recorded facts along with a few graphic inputs to develop a picture of how things may have been.

Koinup's Historical Works Group is for pieces set in historical, ancient and times past. From Victorian to Stoneage, real or fantasy. These pieces provide a fantastic window into the perceived past. This small group of 22 members has over 200 posts and is looking for another moderator to ensure pieces stay within the theme. Additionally, they have started a discussion topic. Not bad for a group that just got started a few months ago. Looks like they are off to a running start on fostering a lovely community full of historical themes.

Dreaming, just try dreaming... by Link Photo by: Link

Link's Dreaming, Just Try Dreaming... is a tribute to WWII. Link composed a really lovely piece complete with appropriate attire and surroundings. Definitely has a nostalgic feeling to it.

The Mirror by MedeAthena Photo by: MedeAthena

MedeAthena's The Mirror expresses days gone by not only a very victorian themed subject matter but also with the monochromatic tones of the piece.

Malchik Gay I by Jasper Photo by: Jasper

Jasper's Malick Gay I shows some wonderful past era expression and beautiful depth of field. This work also contains a snippet of a story that Jasper illustrates both visually and textually.

Please feel free to PM me on Koinup and tell me all about what's happening in your groups. You never know when you'll be Koinup's Cream of the Crop pick of the week!

Meet Me in the Metaverse - Mont Saint Michel

I'm a real life explorer. I try to plan a trip out of the country every few years. Several years back, I saw a pic of Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France and it's been on my must see list ever since. I just haven't gotten back to France yet. One of the things I love best about SL is the chance to see some recreations of RL things be it architecture to toys. It always brings a smile. Since I've not made it to Normandy yet, at least I have gotten to explore Mont Saint Michel virtually. And it's my Meet Me in the Metaverse pick of the week.

Mont Saint Michel is a lovely estate sim that not only serves as a recreation of this historic landmark but also has a good bit of retail. It is the home of Edelweiss and anyone reading this that is a fashionista knows it's the end stop for the bi-yearly CSR coupon event. (Which is going on now). I want encourage you all to take a big roam around the sim and see how beautifully the creators have recreated the multiple elevations that make up this fantastic RL landmark.

Le Mont Saint Michel by butler_cathandsPhoto by: butler_cathand

I love butler_cathands' piece Le Mont Saint Michel. I'm sure to find something similar on a postcard once I visit this real life landmark. The fog effect used on this piece adds a good bit of realism.

Chaos_Teardrop's Le Mont Saint-Michel takes an interesting perspective on the gianormus structure. It gives a fantastic aerial to see the grounds and all the levels.

Mont Saint Michel by TalliePhoto by: Tallie

Tallie's Mont Saint Michel piece takes us out of the clouds and down to street level. As you can see from this work, there is a lot more to Mont Sant Michel than just the outer structure.

If you are interested in having your sim featured on Meet Me in the Metaverse, please feel free to contact me in game or via the PM feature within Koinup.

OMNIBUS .... Conflict

In last weeks post I tackled the subject of being bad. In the course of looking through all the images readers had uploaded I came across so many that dealt with internal conflict that I had to continue on this theme this week.

Conflict between the Unconscious and Conscious parts of our psyche are at the root of all these feelings and images, but it would be too much psychology to discuss these issues in depth here (see below for more on this subject).

Many of the images I saw depicted Good vs Evil or Angel vs Devil in a very literal way, dividing the image into two parts, an avi dressed in black and one in white.
Very few of them worked as a composition, this one, from IMVU, Angelos o Demonios by KuroAngel being more successfully composed than many.
Although these two nice little boys I would probably eat for breakfast, neither of them being very evil looking.

This is a lovely image, I think, and although it isn't labelled as a conflict image it has subtle duality which seemed to me to be on this theme. Your Voice Through a Photograph from the Sims is by Sour Tea who is obviously a talented image maker.

Good vs Evil is the title of this piece which, classically, externalises the conflict into two separate beings who battle.
Taken in Second Life by Daffodil Crimson... I think it works well as a composition and touches the archetypal subject matter; dynamic and interesting.

As I have said before i have great respect for those who manage to get some good imagery out of IMVU as they seem to have more basic tools than SL or the Sims. So this one, Devil Angel by Buldoga needed including.
I like the idea of the implied conflict, and the way that is carried into the use of the medium......a scratchy black angel.

Again, an image that externalises the Evil into a separate being, A Battle Between Good and Evil from the Sims, is a classic image very well executed by Sandybvv. Well composed, convincing action, good dynamics and a great use of colour makes this one of the best Conflict images I have seen.

Well, its obviously a big topic to judge from the number of images I have seen and I have really just touched the surface..... so....keep on with those photos... it's a subject that interests us all.....

Happy snapping.....

:))

soror

[The concept of Conscious vs Unconsciousness as the base of all conflict is taken from work by C. G. Jung. The premise being that the Unconscious is, by definition, outside the control of Consciousness and therefore acts autonomously (as it wants). Christian tradition labels all such psychic inspiration as Evil unless it has been approved by the Church, making all of us the home of Evil, and, therefore, guilty of everything. It is traditional to separate out this psychic element into an external being (rather a schizophrenic state of affairs) called the Devil, and blame him instead.]

Koinup's Cream of the Crop - Fantasy Art

Koinup’s Cream of the Crop for this week is the Fantasy Art group. Loosely defined, fantasy art depicts creatures and themes that are magical or supernatural in overall subject matter. Over the years, I’ve spent numerous hours looking at fantasy art on sites like Epilogue, Deviant Art and Elfwood. In my humble opinion, nothing more has changed the face of this genre than than works being produced with elements directly from 3D games like Sims, WoW, and Secondlife.

The Fantasy Art group on Koinup is a wildly creative bunch that holds their own in terms of inventiveness in this school of work. Most of them are true works of art done with some photoshop magic and other art tools to accomplish the end result. The 54 members of this group have submitted 501 aweinspiring pieces well worth browsing through.

And blue will come for you...by Maggg Photo by: Magggg

Magggg is one of the finest contributors to Koinup in regards to fantasy art. On numerous occasions I see Magggg’s work upon logging into Koinup. In Magggg's And blue will come for you... she mixes both the SIMS and SL to achieve the desired outcome.

Give Praise to the Goddess of Stormy Seas by TrixibellePhoto by: Trixibelle

Trixibelle's Give Praise to the Goddess of Stormy Seas is the epitome of the fantasy art genre. A supernatural deity complete with the power to rule the skies and seas in order to upset the mere mortals. Trixibelle used elements from secondlife and renderosity to complete this fantastic piece.

Fairytale by _MiraGe_

_MiraGe_'s Fairytale displays a very common theme among within the fantasy art genre; beauty and the beast. Tastefully done with an angelic beauty and a potentially menacing dragon as the beast. Her piece contains elements from the Sims and deviant art.

If your group is having a contest or an event, please PM me on Koinup and let me know. I'd love to cover all the fun to be had in joining such expressive groups of people from all over.

OMNIBUS ..Be Bad.

A few thoughts on being bad....:))

Now, as we all have to function, at least in part, with other Humans in the so-called real world, we are constantly modifying and self-censoring our behaviour. So it is only natural that the part of our psyche which is labelled BAD by current social and legal framework is often, at least by the courageous amongst us, allowed to blossom in the freedom of Virtual Worlds.

I have known people who are so shocked by their own badness that they have left this new life and retired back into the shell of their old existence.......shame.

The Diamond Sutra by the Bhudda says “Goodness is just another name”, and, generally Eastern philosophies see Yin and Yang as equally vital parts of Nature. It is rather more traditional religions that force us into wanting to sweep the more animal sides of our existance under the carpet.

...so these few photos I have selected this week celebrate the “bad”....

This is particularly glorious, I think, as IMVU is designed as a cute, “fluffy”, nice world where avis are a bit “Disney’ and overly PG for the most part.

Hats off then to siq 101 for creating someone who you wouldn’t want anywhere near your bedside....armed with medical tools or not.

Turning things on their heads is an important duty of any artist...... Cynical Nurses Can Be Scary...... indeed

....well, I think I wouldn’t really want to meet Deb when she was in a bad mood, she doesn’t really look like the sort of girl you’d talk about interior design with.... but then, I could be wrong.... certainly an unsettling lady, maybe unbalanced....... totally excellent portrait from the Sims by Piccolouomo

We Didn't Do It ...yeh,....right.....of course not...:))

Whether its conspiracy, drugs or random criminality, this room is a hang-out of some definitely dodgy characters. I can almost smell the smoke and sex.
The use of light reminds me of an old Dutch Master and is more “immersive” than all the interactive gimmicks, tricks and tom-foolery that is normally thrown at us in the name of art.

An old favourite of mine by Rockerfaerie

Violent doll has many images which I could have chosen for this post, she seems to understand that avis need to have character.....and that a bad attitude is a thing of beauty.

I Am Evil Lie

This girl would bring out the worst in anyone I think.

Is it just me or does she ooze sexual malpractices?? mmmm hmmmm...

So, in conclusion, my advice to all virtual pioneers....get out there and BE BAD..... far better than being boring.
